SWEET THING Blurb:

Mia Kelly is a twenty-five-year-old walking Gap ad who thinks she has life figured out when her father’s sudden death uproots her from slow-paced Ann Arbor to New York City’s bustling East Village. There she discovers her father’s spirit for life and the legacy he left behind with the help of an old café, a few eccentric friends, and one charming musician.

Will Ryan is good-looking, poetic, spontaneous, and on the brink of fame when he meets Mia, his new landlord, muse, and personal heartbreaker.
A story of self-discovery and friendship, Sweet Thing shines light on the power of loving and letting go.

MY REVIEW

4 Stars

Sweet Thing is the story of Mia and Will.  Mia has just moved to New York and Will becomes her roommate.  There is an instant attraction between the two of them, and while Will wants to pursue it, Mia is intent on denying it and remaining friends.  She has a very definite view of the type of man she wants to date and it is not a musician.  The problem is that sometimes your heart wants something entirely different to what your mind wants.

“I thought being an independent woman who was in control and made decisions with her head and not her heart was evolved.”

The story follows their journey as they both individually pursue their dreams.  Will is a musician who is navigating the choices involved with chasing musical success through a record deal.  Mia spends her days running her father’s café while trying to work out what she wants in life.  Will lets his heart lead him while Mia tries to follow a very practical path and silence her heart’s desires.  Their friends and family feature throughout the book and help guide them on their journey.  Music also features heavily in the book as Mia is also quite gifted musically.  She and Will share a special bond where their music is concerned and I really enjoyed this aspect of the book.

Little gems of wisdom were scattered throughout and I loved the way the author wrote them into the story.

“You have to teach your heart and mind how to sing together...then you’ll hear the sound of your soul.”

This really was the thing that Mia had to learn how to do.  I will admit that I found Mia quite frustrating throughout a lot of the book.  I just wanted to slap some sense into her!  This was, however, what the story required to show how she changed and grew as a person.  In the end, I loved how Mia evolved and even though at times it felt like such a slow and heartbreaking journey for her, it all happened as it should have.  Will is a character you will fall in love with and he was just what Mia needed to learn what she needed to learn.

“Like the rest of us, she will have to learn the hard way that we are not always in control.  Sometimes it takes the love of others to show us who we really are.”

Something cool about the book that I really liked was the prologue and epilogue.  They were told by someone outside of the story but in the end the author found a way to tie them all together – loved it!
